Rock and Roll: What is it?

A brief history of Rock And Roll

Rockabilly couple dancing on a vinyl recordRock and roll is a genre of music that started in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It grew to become one of the most popular genres of music in the 1950s and early 1960s. The term rock and roll described a genre of music derived from country, blues, rhythm & blues and gospel. When this type of music started, only a small section of teenagers loved it. In the 1950s, almost all teenagers in the United States were in love with rock and roll music. Many parents hated this music. This is because they believed that it was noise that had a negative influence on the character of their growing children. Later they had to accept it after realizing that it is new genre of music that was there to stay.

The evolution of rock and roll

Rock & roll started in 1940s when electronic guitars became more affordable. It was not fully accepted by most people until the early 1950s. The acceptance of this type of music marked a significant turning point in the evolution and history of American music.

Teenager who loved rock and roll in the 1940s had to hide when listening to music. They could only listen to the music in secret because it was hated by their parents. The desire by teenagers to differentiate themselves from their parents can be credited as one of the things that led to the growth of this genre of music.

Although rock and roll has significantly evolved, it still is a genre of music preferred by the young people. The basics of this genre of music have remained unchanged since the 1940s and 1950s. It is still music that is associated with youthful rebellion. Most young people thought of this type of as music that brings them spontaneous energy to party and have fun.

The white youths in the 1950s wanted crazy music. They wanted music that inspired them to rebel. They were used to easy-listening music that their parents loved to listen to. The beat of rock and roll provided them with something different from what they used to hear their parents listen to. There were really bored with what their parents were listening to. This genre of music provided them with what they were desperately looking for. It communicated to them in a way that the music that their parent listened to didn’t. In the 1950s, youths used to sit in groups after school just to listen to this rock & roll.

Young white teens were looking for swagger. Over the years after rock and roll came into existence, they would turn on the radios and listen to tunes that sounded nothing like what their parents used to listen to. The sound of rock and roll was able to thrill them and trigger their imaginations. This was because these songs were being made by people who are young and spoke to the young generation in a way that music that their parents listened to could not. This genre of music not only gave them unique rhythm, it gave them modern attitudes to enjoy and to emulate. This music also reflected the major cultural and social changes that were brought about by postwar urbanization. The youth have always loved the lifestyle associated with this type of music. They also loved to memorize the slang used by rock & roll artists.

There was a decline of rock and roll in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This happened because most of the major artists either died or had major scandals that destroyed their public image. The rise of other genres of music was also one of the factors that led to the decline rock and roll.

Big names in rock and roll

Since the development of rock and roll has been an evolutionary process, there is no single record that can be labeled as the first rock & roll record made. The big names in this genre in music at the beginning (1940s to 1950s) include Goree Carter, Jimmy Preston, Jackie Brenston, Bill Halley, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent and many others. Today, rock and roll is not as powerful as it used to be the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. However, the are many modern artist keeping rock & roll alive.
