Pop music has constantly been changing. This is mostly because of the influence of other genres of music. Pop music started in the western world in the 1950s and 1960s. It was derived from rock and roll. Pop music borrows a lot of things from other genres of music including dance, urban, rock and country. There are certain elements that define pop music. Pop songs are characterized by their traditional format (verse and chorus structure), repeated choruses, hooks and melodic tunes. These songs are always short.

It came out of the rock and roll revolution that took place in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

This type of music is also played the most by radio stations. From the 1950s, the sound of pop music has always been based on the element of rock and roll.
The structure of pop music
The basic structure of a pop song consists of verses followed by repeated choruses. Most of these songs are between 2 minutes and 5 minutes in length. However, there are a few notable exceptions. There are some pop songs that are longer than 5 1/2 minutes. Some songs made in the 1950s were under 2 minutes in length. Today, rock, R&B, hip hop, disco etc. have been incorporated into this type of songs in many different ways.
For a long time, pop music charts have been dominated by American and British artists. Artists from these two countries also have the strongest influence in the growth and development of pop music. However, this does not mean that pop is not popular in non-western countries. Japan has a thriving pop music industry which is influence by western pop styles.
